2018 Honda Pilot, CR-V and HR-V could get hybrid versions

Honda started the 2017 year by presenting the redesigned Odyssey minivan at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. The new model is great and big advance compared to the previous generation. Honda also created a significant story during this show. An announcement is related with Honda’s ambitious plan for electrifying many of the future vehicles. Honda’s CEO Takahiro Hachigo actually claimed that company plans to utilize some kind of electric powertrain in half of its all-new models which should come in the next two years. More in the plan is the goal to have two-thirds of total revenue from the electrified models by 2030. Another daring task is to reduce CO2 emissions from the 2000 degrees in two by the half of this century. Honda also announced that Honda Pilot, CR-V and HR-V should also get hybrid versions.

However, Honda also said that its full light-truck selection should be electrified in the future. That aside from mentioned crossover SUV models also includes the Odyssey minivan and Ridgeline pickup truck. Regrettably, Honda was maybe not unique about when new hybrid versions will come and what form the hybrid powertrains can get. What Honda revealed only is that it will use some type of the “two-motor hybrid system” which is already the part of the Acord Hybrid.

HONDA PILOT, CR-V AND HR-V: WHO COULD BE THE FIRST FOR THE HYBRIDIZATION?

At the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, Honda already presented the Chinese industry committed CR-V hybrid model but also again confirmed the plans for hybridization of its light-truck lineup. However, Honda remained tight lipped about could that CR-V hybrid appear in the US shortly and also claimed nothing about the powertrain specification.

On the other hand, most of the experts suggesting that CR-V hybrid could employ the powertrain from the Honda Accord hybrid sedan. The Accord Cross combines the 2.0-liter Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder engine and two electrical motors. The trunk-mounted power supply provides the power for the electric motors. The front wheels get the power through the continuously variable transmission. The sedan model can count on the total of 212 hp. The EPA ratings are 49 mpg town and 47 mpg highway.

If the CR-V gets that hybrid setup with the similar weight as the Accord model, it will beat the EPA ratings of the main rivals, the Toyota RAv4 and Nissan Rogue. The first returns 32 mpg combined while the Rogue earns 34 mpg combined.

So, the closest to the arrival is the 2018 Honda CR-V Cross which should go on sale in the Chinese industry by the end of the year and could also come to the US soon. The Pilot and HR-V models could also follow with the hybrid version as the part of the mid-cycle renew for the 2018 or 2019 model year. To be able to compete with the Chrysler Pacifica Cross, the redesigned Odyssey may also be electrified in a year of two.
